This artform is important to continue even when we are far from our homelands because it provides visibility and representations to indigenous identities that are often grupen under Latino or hispanic labels. My daughter and I have participated in numerous events that promote and teach about Indigenous cultures, practices and awareness for equality. These events give us an opportunity to share our identity and knowledge with the community, including the symbolism of textiles. I see that people have many misconceptions about the Maya, and Indigenous people in general. I work hard to share our stories, our truth and living cultures. My participation in these events provides an educational platform to make the diversity of immigrant Indigenous communities more visible in our state.
